Laying flowers

On Friday, 7 November 2014, I attended a beautiful Remembrance Day service at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch. Since the first time I attended such a service in 2011, the event has become even bigger, with more people attending. It was a perfect early summer’s day, with a clear blue sky overhead, and just a slight breeze setting the flags a-fluttering.

After all the important people and representatives of organisations have laid their wreaths, members of the public are invited to lay flowers in memory of their fallen loved ones too.

And, it being a Children’s Hospital, there was a large group of very young children who too took turns placing flowers carefully at the foot of the memorial. It was such a heartwarming sight. I wonder how many of them will remember this moment when they grow older?
